Shetland The Shetland has a long history, probably arriving in the Shetland Islands with Viking settlers. It belongs to the Northern European short tailed group that includes the Finn, Norwegian and Icelandic breeds which are all wonderful for feltmaking. The Shetland is the smallest of the British breeds and the one that comes in the largest range of colours – 11 in all – including Moorit (moor red), Skiela (brown grey), Emsket (bluish grey) and Mioget (yellowish brown).
For felting: This fleece felts fairly quickly (though not as quickly as Bluefaced Leicester). The felt is soft but reasonably firm with a ‘hairy’ finish that is great for adding texture or contrasting with other finer wools.
